The Liga MX playoffs are just around the corner, with the Clausura 2026 season set to conclude on April 26. At AS, we take a look at the most successful Mexican clubs since 2015, a period that has seen familiar powers rise, others struggle, and one major question emerge: who will become Mexico’s “new” fourth giant?

The rise of a new hierarchy in Mexican soccer

Since 2015, Mexican soccer has entered a clear era defined by dominant dynasties, historic comebacks, and prolonged title droughts. Traditional heavyweights and well-structured projects have shared domestic and international trophies, shaping one of the most competitive periods in Liga MX history.

Tigres lead the modern era

One of the standout teams of this stretch is Tigres UANL, with 10 official titles. That total includes five Liga MX championships (Apertura 2015, 2016 and 2017, plus Clausura 2019 and 2023).

They have also added four Campeón de Campeones trophies and the 2020 CONCACAF Champions Cup, establishing the Monterrey club as one of the most dominant forces in modern Mexican soccer.

Club América right on their heels

Close behind is Club América with nine official titles. That run includes four league championships (Apertura 2018, Apertura 2023, Clausura 2024 and Apertura 2024).

The Mexico City giants have also claimed the 2016 CONCACAF Champions Cup and maintained a constant presence in finals, reinforcing their status as one of the sport’s most consistent winners.

Cruz Azul’s long-awaited resurgence

Cruz Azul has experienced a major revival after years of inconsistency. The club has won seven titles in this period, highlighted by the long-awaited Liga MX crown in the Guardianes 2021 tournament.

They have also lifted the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup, along with domestic trophies such as the Copa MX, Supercopa MX, and the Leagues Cup, marking a return to consistent contention.

Pachuca’s international consistency

Pachuca continues to stand out as a model of international success, earning six titles since 2015. That includes two Liga MX championships (Clausura 2016 and Apertura 2022) and two CONCACAF Champions Cup titles (2017 and 2024).

The club has also added recent international honors such as the FIFA Challenger Cup and the 2024 Derby of the Americas, underscoring its global competitiveness.

Chivas maintain their relevance

Club Deportivo Guadalajara, better known as Chivas, has won five titles since 2015. Their peak came in 2017, when they captured a domestic double with both the Liga MX title and Copa MX.

They followed that with the 2018 CONCACAF Champions Cup, reinforcing their place among Mexico’s most important clubs.

Pumas’ ongoing drought

In contrast, Club Universidad Nacional, commonly known as Pumas, has not won an official title in this period. That drought stands in stark contrast to the club’s historic stature in Mexican soccer.

Toluca and Atlas highlight recent breakthroughs

Deportivo Toluca has enjoyed a recent resurgence with three official titles, including back-to-back league championships in 2025 and a Campeón de Campeones trophy.

Atlas also ended a 70-year wait for a league title, winning consecutive championships in 2021 and 2022, along with a Campeón de Campeones victory.

A defining era for Liga MX

Overall, this period reflects a highly competitive Liga MX landscape, where institutional stability, investment, and long-term sporting projects have separated the dominant clubs from those still chasing consistency and success.
