England go into the quarter-final clash against Senegal as solid favourites but that does not mean that the Three Lions are underestimating the potential challenge that the current African champions will pose for Gareth Southgate’s men.

Speaking to the press ahead of Sunday’s clash at the Al Bayt Stadium, West Ham midfielder Declan Rice claimed: “Senegal are a really strong, athletic team, with some really good individual players. They are a really good team. It’s the first time we’ve played them since I’ve been in the set-up and we know it’s going to be a tough test.”

England, semi-finalists in 2018, are looking to reach the quarter-finals in consecutive World Cups for the first time since 2002 and 2006 under Sven-Goran Eriksson.

If Senegal do pull off a huge upset, it will mark the first time they have won three games at a single World Cup, having also won two en route to the last eight in 2002.

Salvadoran referee Iván Barton will take charge of tonight’s clash in the town of Al Khor to the north of Doha.

A FIFA international referee since 2018, Barton made his 2022 World Cup debut when he oversaw Japan’s shock 2-1 win over Germany in Group E with the man from El Salvador also in charge for Brazil’s Group G win over Switzerland.

The 31-year-old’s assistant referees for the quarter-final will be David Jonathan Morán Santos, Katie Nesbitt and Said Martinez as fourth official with Canada’s Drew Fischer manning the VAR booth.
