France captain Kylian Mbappé had been tipped to lead the race to be the top goalscorer at Euro 2024, but the new Real Madrid superstar hasn’t quite been on top form so far, with just one strike from the penalty spot to his name after the round of 16. Nevertheless, the 25-year-old is just one good game and a couple of goals away from heading the list of leading marksmen, with no player setting the tournament alight in Germany so far.

How many own goals have been scored in Euro 2024?

Indeed, that is perhaps best reflected by the fact there have been a whopping nine own goals, six more than any individual player has managed in the first two rounds of action.

Euro 2024 top scorers ahead of quarterfinals

As it stands, there is a four-way tie at the top of the Euro 2024 goalscoring charts, with the Netherlands’ Cody Gakpo the latest player to join the party by scoring against Romania in the last 16. The Liverpool attacker had previously scored in group fixtures versus Poland and Austria.

Germany winger Jamal Musiala has arguably been the most impressive performer so far, his case backed up by goals in Group A against Scotland and Hungary, and in the round of 16 versus Denmark.

Gakpo and Musiala could yet add to their tallies, although the other two players on three goals will not. Few would have placed bets on Georgia’s Georges Mikautadze and Slovakia’s Ivan Schranz being in contention for the Golden Boot, but they remain in the conversation despite their teams’ eliminations in the second round.

Euro 2024 top scorers

  • 3: Georges Mikautadze (Georgia), Jamal Musiala (Germany), Cody Gakpo (Netherlands), Ivan Schranz (Slovakia)
  • 2: Jude Bellingham (England), Harry Kane (England), Niclas Füllkrug (Germany), Kai Havertz (Germany), Donyell Malen (Netherlands), Razvan Marin (Romania), Fabián Ruiz (Spain)

What happens if multiple players are tied as Euro 2024 top scorers?

If by the end of the tournament, multiple players have scored the same number of goals, assists are the first tiebreaker. As it stands, Mikautadze would take the award after setting up Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s strike against Portugal, with Schranz already out of the reckoning having not registered any.

If the tie still cannot be broken, then the player who played the fewest minutes in the tournament will come out on top.

Seven players who are still active in the tournament - England duo Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane, Germany pair Kai Havertz and Niclas Füllkrug, Spain’s Fabián Ruiz and the Netherlands’ Donyell Malen - have netted twice so far.

Mbappé and Cristiano Ronaldo hope to find form in latter stages

Mbappé, Florian Wirtz, Ilkay Gündogan, Álvaro Morata, Nico Williams and Arda Güler are among the players who have scored once and could still increase their totals. Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who missed a penalty in the round of 16 against Slovenia, is still searching for his first goal.
