Everything points to Yan Diomande becoming a Real Madrid player in the coming days. The move would complete a remarkable rise in record time, just over a year after making his LaLiga debut with Spanish side Leganés. Little more than a month ago, he arrived at the World Cup as Ivory Coast’s biggest star, but behind the explosive winger who has dazzled at RB Leipzig lies a story shaped by poverty, loneliness and a promise to his family that still drives him today. Long before packed stadiums, bright lights and multimillion-dollar offers filled his agent’s phone, the boy from Abidjan learned to survive playing barefoot in the streets of Sicogi, a neighborhood where soccer was not a luxury. It was the only way out.

Poverty, family separation and the mentor who changed everything

On those sun-scorched streets, Diomande quickly realized that talent alone was not enough to escape. His father moved to France when he was still a child, leaving the family in desperate circumstances.

“There were too many of us living in a tiny space, and we barely had enough to get by,” he later recalled.

At just 10 years old, he made a decision few children could imagine: leaving his family to join a distant academy where he could continue playing soccer. He left alone, frightened but convinced the game could change his life.

He did not even own a pair of cleats. In Ivory Coast, he played in sandals on dry dirt fields.

“You needed money to buy cleats,” he explained.

Everything changed thanks to Bamba, the academy director who became like a second father. He gave Diomande a place to live and bought him his first real pair of cleats. Young Yan even went to school wearing his soccer gear so he could sprint straight to training when classes finished. From that point on, every part of his life revolved around a soccer ball.

Forged through loneliness in the United States

Far from his family, Diomande developed into a player while battling homesickness.

His next step proved even harder. Still a teenager and unable to speak English, he traveled completely alone to the United States because his family could only afford one plane ticket.

Florida introduced him to a completely different world: a time difference that made speaking with home difficult, training on American football fields and a loneliness that forced him to grow up quickly. He taught himself English using a phone app and became accustomed to living with nobody around.

“Now I feel like I could live alone forever,” he later admitted of the experience that shaped his character.

It was also in the United States that he realized just how far his talent could take him. He moved through academies, attended club tryouts and played for school teams before becoming the standout player in the USPL, a U.S. semi-professional developmental league. He still treasures his MVP medal. He even caught the attention of MLS organizations and attracted interest from England.

Yet despite his success, he remained homesick.

Soccer kept moving forward, but every night he still missed his family.

The tragedy that changed everything for Diamonde

His younger sister’s death transformed his life just before he got his chance in Europe.

That opportunity finally arrived in January 2025, when Leganés came calling.

Europe. Professional soccer. At last.

But just before signing, Diomande suffered the most devastating blow of his life: his younger sister died.

He was heartbroken.

Still, he decided to keep moving forward.

“I think about her all the time because now I have everything I ever dreamed of, and I can’t share it with her,” he later said.

Since then, her absence has stayed with him every day. Every goal is dedicated to the same person: the sister he promised he would make proud.

Arrival among the elite

At just 19 years old, Diomande has exploded onto the international stage.

After impressing in U.S. academies, Leganés signed him on a free transfer during the 2025 winter window. It proved he was a special talent capable of reaching the very top.

The Spanish club discovered him at DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida. He quickly showed he possessed something different. In just six months, he impressed despite occasionally showing his inexperience, most notably by missing a memorable scoring chance against Barcelona.

A debut among superstars

His professional debut against Real Madrid fulfilled another lifelong dream: facing and meeting Kylian Mbappé.

He barely slept the night before the match.

Standing across from him were Vinícius Júnior and Mbappé, players who had once seemed worlds away. Leganés lost, but Diomande fulfilled another dream by swapping jerseys with Mbappé.

“He’s one of the best players in the world, and I’d always dreamed of playing against him,” he said.

A goal through tears

His first professional goal became an emotional tribute.

Weeks later, he scored against Espanyol. As soon as the ball hit the net, he broke down. He pointed to the sky and burst into tears.

He was not simply celebrating his first goal.

He was releasing years of pain.

“My dream was to make her happy,” he said of his late sister.

Many fans met the player that day, but few understood the grief still carried by the explosive young winger.

Breakout in Germany

RB Leipzig has built its reputation on identifying elite young talent, and Diomande was no exception.

Despite spending only a few months in Europe, the Bundesliga club moved quickly to sign him. They immediately recognized his potential, and their faith has already been rewarded.

Leganés completed outstanding business by receiving €20 million for the transfer.

In Germany, Diomande has taken another huge leap forward. Few are willing to place limits on his potential, with many believing he is destined to become one of the world’s biggest stars.

His breakout season made him one of the Bundesliga’s biggest revelations.

Across all competitions, he contributed to 23 goals in 36 appearances last season, including 12 goals and nine assists in Bundesliga play.

His speed, ability to beat defenders and relentless pressing made him one of Germany’s most exciting players.

Head coach Ole Werner summed up his impact simply:

“He can beat defenders without dribbling, purely through his power.”

Family remains his greatest motivation

Despite his rapid rise, Diomande has never lost sight of what matters most.

Those close to him say his biggest transformation has not been as a player, but as a person.

He constantly speaks about responsibility, helping his mother and becoming the provider for his family.

“I’ve spent half my life away from them,” he said recently.

That is why transfer rumors linking him with Liverpool, Real Madrid and PSG have never distracted him.

The boy who once stole corn near the training fields in Ivory Coast still thinks more about his family than fame.

Every new contract means greater security for the loved ones he left behind.

The present and the hopes of an entire nation

At only 19, Diomande has become the player Ivory Coast believes can lead its future.

He already has three goals in 14 appearances for the senior national team, and many back home believe he possesses maturity well beyond his years.

Ivorian legend Franck Kessié once said the country “can sleep peacefully” with talents like Yan Diomande coming through.

Yet perhaps his greatest achievement has nothing to do with goals or assists.

It is that he survived poverty, separation and heartbreaking loss without ever giving up on the dream he first chased barefoot through the streets of Abidjan.
