As Joaquín Moreno continues to coach Cruz Azul in an interim capacity - he will lead the team against Atlas on Wednesday - the club’s board must decide who will take over from the sacked Raúl Gutiérrez.

Several names in frame to become new Cruz Azul boss

Although various alternatives have been considered, such as Antonio Mohamed, Hugo Sánchez, José Manuel De la Torre and Ricardo Ferretti - candidates with whom various meetings have been held - the truth is that the appointment of a new boss seems to still be a long way off.

Sources have confirmed to AS México that talks between Cruz Azul and Mohamed remain on hold for the moment, after the parties sat down some days ago.

Moreno could be given job for rest of Clausura 2023

The Argentinian, who has already been in the frame to take over at Cruz Azul on other occasions, is open to making a return to Mexican soccer. For their part, club chiefs are in no mood to rush their decision.

If he gets good results in the coming games, Moreno could remain in the Cruz Azul dugout for a while longer or, as some suggest, he could even stay on for the rest of the Clausura 2023.

Mohamed a three-time Liga MX winner

Mohamed lifted the Liga MX title with Club América in the Apertura 2014, and won the Apertura 2019 and two Copa MXs with Monterrey. He also led Tijuana to the Apertura 2012. With Brazilian club Atlético Mineiro, he secured the Supercopa de Brasil last year - the seventh trophy in his coaching career.
