Who will Cabo Verde play next in the Round of 32? World Cup opponent and schedule
The World Cup first-timers have made an incredible run to the knockout stage, emerging from a group that also featured Spain and Uruguay.
Cabo Verde made history on Friday night, booking their place in the knockout rounds of the World Cup after finishing second in Group H.
The World Cup first-timers have been the underdog story of the tournament, securing draws against Spain and Uruguay in their opening games and secured passage to the knockout rounds with a 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia on Friday.
Incredibly Cabo Verde will now take on world champions Argentina in Miami for the Round of 32 on Friday, July 3. They will go into the game as heavy underdogs, but it won’t be the first time that they have faced tough odds this summer.
How many people live in Cabo Verde?
Cabo Verde is a collection of ten volcanic islands off the coast of West Africa. Formerly a Portuguese colony, Cabo Verde became independent in 1975 and has developed rapidly since the 1990s.
The islands’ population is around 530,000 but the national team also relies on the country’s significant diaspora population overseas. The likes of Dailon Livramento and Jamiro Monteiro were born in the Netherlands, while Columbus Crew defender Steven Moreira was born in Noisy-le-Grand, France.
