Mexico look to extend Gold Cup record

The USMNT may be the holders and have the benefit of home advantage, but Mexico are the most successful nation in the history of the Gold Cup. Their record seven triumphs puts them one ahead of the United States and they will be eager to extend their lead this summer.

Mexico finished runners up to the USMNT in the 2021 edition and have an incredible record in recent years. In the past six tournaments Mexico have lifted the trophy on four occasions. El Tri now have two months to prepare for the next attempt.

When is the 2023 Gold Cup?

Staged in the US and Canada, the 2023 Gold Cup is to be held from 24 June to 16 July, with the final to be played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Ahead of the group stages a preliminary tournament will be held from 16 June, with 12 teams competing to fill the final three spots in the Gold Cup group stages. Mexico’s group is already filled by the addition of guest nation Qatar, but the other three groups are each missing one team.

This tournament could be the last chance for iconic players Andrés Guardado and Guillermo Ochoa to taste success at international level. Guardado has a record 179 caps for Mexico and Ochoa is currently on 135.
