Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino is set to be reunited with fellow Argentine Lionel Messi at Inter Miami, with the coach reportedly poised to take charge of the MLS team.

Messi keen to work with Martino in Miami

According to the media outlet 90min, Martino is close to agreeing a deal to replace Phil Neville as Miami boss.

The Florida franchise fired Neville at the start of June after a run of four straight defeats in MLS. The team has also lost its two league games since dismissing the Englishman, and sit bottom of the Eastern Conference with just 15 points from 17 matches.

90min reports that Messi, who has confirmed that he is to join Miami when his Paris Saint-Germain contract expires at the end of June, is eager to link back up with Martino in the US.

Messi played under his countryman at Barcelona in the 2013/14 season, and was in the Argentina national team from 2014 to 2016.

Martino an MLS winner

Martino has previously coached in MLS at Atalanta United, overseeing the Georgia franchise’s first two seasons in the league.

Appointed in Atlanta in 2016, the 60-year-old led the Five Stripes to their first and only MLS title in 2018, before leaving to take the helm of the Mexican national team. He stepped down as Mexico boss in November, after El Tri’s group-stage exit at the 2022 World Cup.
