Update:

No, your eyes do not deceive you: Wolves are not in the Champions League.

As much as I’d love to see it, and I’m not even a Wolves fan, the Premier League’s bottom side are not playing in the elite continental competition this season, and Arsenal do not need to play them if they wish to make the next round of the tournament.

Why is Arsenal vs Wolves being played today?

The match had initially been scheduled for Saturday 21 March.

It was moved because Arsenal are set to play against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, so their game against Wolves has had to be moved to a week when both sides are available.

City’s league fixture with Premier League strugglers Crystal Palace, which was also due on 21 March, has been postponed. However, as of yet, a new date has not yet been confirmed.

Palace are playing against Bosnia and Herzegovina’s second-best side, Zrinjski, in the Conference League knockout play-offs on Thursday evening, meaning that scheduling their game for the same date was impossible.

At the time of writing, Arsenal sit top of the Premier League table after 26 games with a total of 57 points, four ahead of chasers Manchester City.

Should the Gunners beat the bottom side, they will move seven points clear of second and one step closer to making it over the line to win the Premier League title, despite the fact that Mikel Arteta appears to want to play down their chances with every opportunity he gets.
