Why Bernardo Silva is exactly the player Mourinho wants at Real Madrid

If Bernardo Silva has demonstrated one thing during his nine seasons at Manchester City, it’s his commitment to the team above all else. Despite possessing the individual talent that has made him one of soccer’s elite players over the past decade, the Portuguese midfielder has consistently put collective success first.

That is exactly the type of player José Mourinho wants at Real Madrid. Bernardo Silva is viewed as someone who can set the standard on the field while also serving as an influential voice in the locker room.

Bernardo Silva is now close to following the same path as Mourinho.

As first reported by AS, super agent Jorge Mendes offered both men to Real Madrid two months ago. One was available on a free transfer, while the other remained under contract with Benfica but was eager to write a second chapter at the club where he previously worked from 2010 to 2013.

Both were highly regarded by Real Madrid, but at the time the club decided to put those discussions on hold amid uncertainty surrounding the team’s future direction.

Real Madrid makes its decision

As the days passed, Real Madrid’s leadership ultimately embraced the proposal Mendes had presented regarding Mourinho’s return for a second stint at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The decision was made in early May, before the club’s election campaign got underway.

With the election victory secured, Florentino Pérez and the club hierarchy began acting on Mourinho’s requests for next season. One demand stood out immediately: the new coach repeatedly urged Real Madrid to make a serious effort to sign Bernardo Silva.

At that stage, the midfielder was listening to offers, with Barcelona and Atlético Madrid considered the frontrunners for his signature.

Mourinho changes everything

Then everything changed.

The certainty of Mourinho’s arrival at Real Madrid, combined with the coach’s direct request and early assurances that he would play an important role, prompted Bernardo Silva to put all other discussions on hold.

The situation has now completely flipped.

A player who had previously been overlooked has become one of Real Madrid’s top priorities. Jorge Mendes knows it, and so does Bernardo Silva, who is currently in North America preparing for the World Cup.

“I will go where I’m truly wanted,” Silva said recently.

That message has already been delivered loud and clear by the man who is now Real Madrid’s head coach.
