Why have Club León been sanctioned by CONCACAF? What is the sanction?
León defeated Tauro in the first leg of their Concachampions round of 16 tie but have been punished ahead of the return match.
Following Club León’s CONCACAF Champions League victory over Tauro thanks to a goal from Iván Moreno, the Liga MX side announced that it had been hit with a sanction by the governing body because of homophobic chanting from supporters in last year’s quarter-final clash against Seattle Sounders. As a result, Los Esmeraldas will be forced to serve a punishment in the upcoming second leg of the tie against the Panamanians.
Estadio León at 50% capacity for Tauro return
In a statement posted on social media, León revealed that the sanction handed down by CONCACAF meant that they would only be allowed to fill their stadium to 50% of its capacity in the return match in Guanajuato, which takes place next week on Thursday 16 March.
“As a result of a sanction imposed by the CONCACAF Disciplinary Committee due to discriminatory chanting heard in a match between Club León and Seattle Sounders in the previous edition of the Champions League, Estadio León will be restricted to 50% of its capacity for our next match against Tauro FC in the second leg of the Round of 16″, reads the statement issued by the club.
“Club León are aware of the great passion our fans show and the huge encouragement they give us in every game and would like you to always show your support in a way that respects all members of the soccer family who are enjoying the spectacle”, it continues.
“With a new international competition getting underway, we need to be united on and off the field, playing as a team at all times”.
León can equal best ever Champions League campaign
Nicolás Larcamón side are taking part in the competition for the fifth time and a victory over Tauro would see them qualify for the quarter-finals, equalling their best ever run, which they achieved last year.
