Why is Club América coach André Jardine “not satisfied” with his team despite a 13-match unbeaten streak?

Las Águilas defeated Monterrey 3-0 on Sunday to make it five straight wins and qualify for the Liga MX Apertura 2023 playoffs.

Club América have been by far and away the best team in Liga MX’s Apertura 2023 tournament so far. Not only have they collected five more points than anyone else, they also boast the league’s strongest attack and (joint) best defence. However, even all that is not enough for head coach André Jardine.

In an interview with TUDN, the Brazilian acknowledged what his side had achieved during his first season in charge but insisted he wasn’t completely satisfied, despite a superb 13-match unbeaten streak.

“A lot of things” for América to improve on

América played really well but they had to become more consistent. As time has gone on, we’ve become more confident at playing different ways and worked hard on our defensive system. We’re improving, but am I 100% satisfied with the team? No,” he claimed.

Looking ahead to the playoffs and the fight for the league title, Jardine revealed that he has pinpointed several areas in which his team must improve.

Águilas “have to do more” in playoffs

“There a lot of things to improve on, but it’s good to be able to fix mistakes while winning and we’re looking forward to being as ready as possible for the playoffs. We’re pleased with how we’ve been playing but we know we have to do more, it’s a very hard tournament.”

André confessed that managing one of the most successful teams in Mexico had been one of the biggest challenges of his career.

Managing América “a huge challenge”

América is a huge challenge. There aren’t just 11 good players here, there are 20 good players who could be start for any other team in the league,” he mentioned.

And he added: “I try to adapt every day, reward those who train well and have been playing well, as well as sometimes giving others a chance because, in the end, we need more than 11 players. Whenever the starting line-up changes, it means we’re changing our tactics and way of attacking because at the beginning it was a big challenge for the players to discover how my mind works. Now they have adapted and are happy because they feel appreciated every time they play.”

League leaders face Atlético San Luis on Wednesday

América are back in Apertura 2023 action on Wednesday (1 November) away to Atlético San Luis, with kick-off at Estadio Alfonso Lastras at 11:00 p.m. ET.
