Champions League
Why isn’t Alexis Mac Allister playing for Liverpool today against Girona in the Champions League?
Mac Allister opened the scoring in the win over Real Madrid but will miss The Reds’ second successive UCL game against Spanish opposition.
Following their 2-0 Champions League win over Real Madrid at Anfield, Liverpool travel to Girona looking to record their second successive victory over Spanish opposition on Tuesday and keep their perfect record in the league phase intact. However, Arne Slot will be unable to call upon key midfield man Alexis Mac Allister in Catalonia on matchday six.
Mac Allister’s absence in Girona explained
The Argentine scored the opening goal in the victory over Madrid two weeks ago, although that came after he had been shown a yellow card in the 40th minute. As Mac Allister had also been booked on matchdays one (against AC Milan) and three (against RB Leipzig), he incurred a one-match suspension, which he must now serve in Girona.
The 25-year-old had previously featured in every game for The Reds this season in the Premier League, Champions League and League Cup, starting 17 of the team’s first 21 fixtures in all competitions.
Liverpool team news for Girona: Konaté, Jota, Chiesa...
Slot will also be without central defender Ibrahima Konaté, who has been ruled out until late January due to knee injury. Attackers Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa are still sidelined too, as are full-backs Conor Bradley and Kostas Tsimikas.
Having won each of their first five league phrase games, Liverpool are so far the only team guaranteed a knockout phase playoff place (a top 24 finish). Clinching a round-of-16 spot (a top eight finish) will now be their main goal, which they could achieve against Girona on Tuesday.
