Chivas Guadalajara will be without Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández and Isaác Brizuela for today’s Clausura 2024 clash with Monterrey. Hernández and Brizuela have both been ruled out by stomach complaints, and were absent from the 21-man squad named by Chivas boss Fernando Gago on Friday.

Hernández, who re-signed for his boyhood club in January, had started both of Los Rojiblancos’ past two Liga MX games, having completed his recovery from an ACL tear suffered while playing for Los Angeles Galaxy last year.

Who could replace Hernández, Brizuela?

For the trip to Monterrey, Gago has a number of players who could replace the 35-year-old at centre-forward. Cade Cowell and Roberto Alvarado are both options, as is José Juan Macías, who has been working his way back into the team after sustaining a spate of injuries.

Hernández has made six appearances for Chivas since rejoining on a free transfer, but is yet to add to the 29 goals he scored in his first spell at the Guadalajara club, between 2006 and 2010.

Meanwhile, Fernando Beltrán, Pável Pérez and Alan Torres are chief among the players in contention to take Brizuela’s place on the wing.

Where are Monterrey, Chivas in the Liga MX standings?

While Monterrey have won their last three Liga MX games and sit top of the Clausura 2024 regular-season table, Chivas find themselves down in 10th.

With just one win in their past six league outings, the 12-time Mexican champions are six points adrift of sixth place - the final spot that brings automatic qualification for the playoffs. The teams finishing seventh to 10th must negotiate a play-in round to reach the postseason proper.
