Why isn’t Viktor Gyökeres playing for Arsenal against PSG in the Champions League final today?

Viktor Gyökeres has been left out of Arsenal’s starting lineup for the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, despite his strong finish to the season.

A tactical decision from Gunners manager Mikel Arteta means the Swede will start on the bench and hope to make an impact later in the game.

Gyökeres left out of another big game

Although Gyökeres has been used as a substitute on 14 occasions in different competitions this season, he started 11 of Arsenal’s 12 Champions League games before Saturday’s final, scoring five goals.

However, he did not start the crucial clash away to Manchester City and has been left out once again in another high-stakes match.

Havertz leads the line

Kai Havertz will instead play in a central attacking role, without the traditional target-man presence Gyökeres usually provides.

Out wide, Arteta has opted for Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard, who will need to be alert to the forward runs of PSG fullbacks Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes.

Gyökeres waiting for his moment

After a slow start, Gyökeres has scored 21 goals in his debut season for Arsenal, but he will have to bide his time as he looks to add his 22nd, and potentially more, from the bench in the Champions League final.
