The passing of Ivar Eggja, a close friend of the Haaland family whom Erling is said to have considered like an uncle, may lead the Manchester City striker to miss the upcoming Premier League match.

Following the news of Eggja’s death, the striker missed Wednesday’s training session, citing a family issue. Later, he shared a heartfelt message in Norwegian on social media.

“You’re a legend, Ivar. Words can’t describe how much you meant to me. We will miss you more than words can say. Thank you for everything, crazy man. We’ll meet again. Rest in peace, Ivar.”

Haaland to make City return decision

Haaland was a notable returnee in Thursday’s session, rejoining the team for regular training. However, his availability for the match against Brentford, scheduled for the fourth matchday of the 2024-25 Premier League at the Etihad Stadium, remains uncertain. Reports state that “he will be granted compassionate leave if he needs to miss the match.” The club has expressed understanding, emphasising that “family comes first.”

As Pep Guardiola prepares to address the media on Friday, the Spanish coach will grant Haaland personal leave if the Norwegian striker wishes. Whether he plays against the Bees, therefore, will depend on Haaland himself. A starter in all four of City’s matches so far this season, he has kicked off the campaign in excellent form. After overcoming the physical issues that hampered him last season and benefiting from a full preseason with the team, Haaland has already scored seven goals in the first three Premier League matches.
