Will Marcos Llorente follow Canales to the Liga MX?
With Sergio Canales moves to Monterrey making headline news, Mexican media asked Marcos Llorente whether he too would like to come to the Liga MX.
Atlético Madrid continue their preparations for the new season with a friendly against fellow LaLiga rivals Real Sociedad - an opponent they have met 164 times - but never in Mexican territory. On Tuesday, the Colchoneros trained at the BBVA Training Center, the home of CF Monterrey.
After the session, Marcos Llorente and Axel Witsel gave their thoughts on the friendly against the Basques. “I think it’s going to be a great match as both teams know each other very well and we have both been playing at a high level. I think the people who come along to watch it won’t be disappointed, the fans will enjoy it,” Llorente told reporters.
Axel added: “It’s going to be a nice experience. This is the first time I’ve visited Mexico. I’m really happy to be here although it was a very long trip from Korea. I know Mexican people have a great passion for soccer. I hope the atmosphere in the stands will be crazy tomorrow night”.
Both players were asked the million dollar question, what they thought of Sergio Canales’ move to Rayados and whether they might follow suit. Marcos Llorente is tied to Atlético until 2027 and a key player for Diego Simeone. Valued at €35 million, it’s unlikely that he will be going anywhere at the moment, but nevertheless, he left the doors open to Mexican soccer one day in the future.
“If Canales decided that this is the best move for him, then it’s not for us to comment. Ultimately, when opportunities like this arise, every individual will look at the pros and cons. If he thinks it’s a good opportunity for him, then that should be applauded, it’s fantastic and we wish him the best and I am sure that he will do well,” the Spanish midfielder explained.
When asked if he might be tempted to try his luck in the Liga MX, Llorente replied, “Who? Me? here? (laughs), I still have many years left on my contract at Atlético. But I have to say that if an opportunity comes along, you should always consider it”.
