Will Mohamed Salah play in Liverpool’s match against Aston Villa on Friday
Liverpool are preparing for a massive match against Aston Villa with a Champions League spot on the line for the winner of Friday’s match from Villa Park.
Mohamed Salah’s days are numbers at Anfield. The Egyptian has already announced he will be leaving at the end of the season, but it appears that he will be available for the final two matches of the season.
Mo to return in limited role
Salah suffered a thigh injury in the Reds 3-1 win over Crystal Palace at the end of April, and there were fears that he had played his final match in a Liverpool shirt. The injury kept him out of matches against Manchester United and Chelsea but he seems set for a return for the final two rounds of the campaign.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirmed Salah will be back for a crucial encounter with Aston Villa, although it will be in a limited capacity. “Mo will be available for tomorrow only for a few minutes, but hopefully he can come in,” Slot said in his press conference on Thursday,” said Slot.
A season after scoring a personal record 29 goals, and 18 assists in last year’s title winning league campaign, Salah’s numbers have dropped. His role in Slot’s second year has diminished and the Reds have slumped down the table. Now after nine years, Salah is headed for the exit ramp at Anfield.
Wirtz, Alisson doubtful
The Egyptian announced he would be leaving the club early this season and all indications point to Salah making a move to Saudi Arabia. In his time with the Reds, Salah won a Champions League, two league titles and will finish third in the club’s all time goal scoring list behind legends Ian Rush and Roger Hunt.
There was growing concern that Salah may not have been able to return before the end of the season, but he looks to be set for a fitting farewell on the final match day of the campaing. If Liverpool take three points against Aston Villa they will wrap up Champions League play for next year, and the focus can be on Salah’s farewell when the Reds return home for their match against Brentford. If not, it could be an awfully nervy end to the season with the final Champions League spot potentially up for grabs on the final day of the season.
Slot also gave updates on his Brazilian keeper that has been out for the last few weeks. “Alisson trains with us again, let’s see where he is tomorrow, if he is ready already or has to wait one more week,” said Slot. Meanwhile Florian Wirtz has been battling an illness and the manager won’t know if he’ll be available until the day of the match. “Stomach infection, so let’s see how fit he is for tomorrow. He’s on antibiotics. Let’s see if he’s ready to play tomorrow.”
