2026 World Cup bracket: Matchups and who faces whom in the Round of 32
The knockout stage is set with 32 teams remaining as the 2026 World Cup heads into win-or-go-home mode across North America.
The World Cup group stage is over. After weeks of surprises, statement wins, and a few narrow escapes, the 2026 World Cup bracket is officially set. The expanded tournament now moves into its first-ever Round of 32, where every match is win or go home.
With 48 teams entering the tournament and only 32 remaining, the knockout stage begins with a mix of global heavyweights, rising contenders, and a handful of underdog stories that have already made history.
And from the very first whistle, there’s no easing into it. Several massive matchups headline the opening round.

Early storylines and bracket takeaways
Some of the tournament favorites have not been so lucky. France and Germany, two perennial contenders, are on a collision course for the Round of 16 if both handle business. That means one giant will be eliminated far earlier than expected.
Brazil also faces a tricky opener against Japan, a team capable of springing an upset, while England’s path could quickly become complicated depending on how the bracket unfolds.
On the other side, defending champion Argentina appears to have caught a favorable draw, opening against Cape Verde. But in the World Cup, nothing is guaranteed.
One of the biggest storylines heading into the knockout stage is the success of the host nations. The United States, Mexico, and Canada have all advanced, a significant boost for the tournament’s atmosphere and momentum. But the road ahead won’t be easy.
Mexico, in particular, faces a difficult test against Ecuador, while the United States and Canada will each need to prove they can handle the pressure of knockout games on their home soil.
What the path to the final looks like
Beyond the Round of 32, the bracket only gets more intense.
Potential Round of 16 clashes include:
- Germany/Paraguay vs. France/Sweden
- Mexico/Ecuador vs. England/DR Congo
- USA/Bosnia vs. Belgium/Senegal
By the quarterfinals, the tournament could feature stacked matchups loaded with contenders, depending on who survives the early rounds. The semifinals are set for mid-July, with the final scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
