World Cup 2026

Bernardo Silva takes on the test

The World Cup, in which he makes his debut on Wednesday, will serve as a barometer for Madrid’s bet on him and also for Barça and Atlético for having missed out.

The standout name at this World Cup before a ball has even been kicked is Bernardo Silva. The Portuguese footballer is on the verge of becoming a Real Madrid player. The former City star has been one of the most talked-about figures of the summer, both for his undeniable quality and for the market opportunity he represents. Available on a free transfer, 31 years old, and one of the leaders of the Portuguese national team, Silva will make his World Cup debut on Wednesday in Houston against the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada will serve as a barometer for Real Madrid’s gamble on the player. Madrid, which was not initially the favourite to sign him, will find out whether its change of course was justified. Meanwhile, Barça and Atlético Madrid, the other two clubs interested in Silva, may watch the World Cup with some regret if they realise they missed the chance to convince him. In Barça’s case, because they already feel well covered in his position; in Atlético’s, because they were unable to match the sporting project that Madrid presented in the player’s eyes.

Bernardo arrives highly motivated, fully aware that this is his summer. He will be playing in his third World Cup after also featuring in the tournaments in Russia and Qatar. He has been a fixture under every manager he has played for, including Roberto Martínez, although his role has evolved alongside the changes in his game at City.

The attacking midfielder or inverted winger of his early years has developed into a complete central attacker. He still possesses the same technical quality, but now combines it with midfield traits that make him an exceptionally versatile and valuable player.

That versatility is reflected in Portugal’s setup. He can play alongside Vitinha and João Neves in midfield, allowing Bruno Fernandes to operate further forward alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and, most likely, Rafael Leão. Equally, he can start from a wide position and drift inside to orchestrate attacks when Portugal dominates possession.

Responsibility has never weighed heavily on Bernardo’s shoulders. With 109 international caps, he has already tasted glory twice through Portugal’s Nations League triumphs in 2019 and 2025. His dream now is to crown his long international career with the ultimate prize: the World Cup. It is the ambition shared by an entire nation that believes this golden generation can make history. With Bernardo Silva in the team, that dream feels a little closer.
