Goodbye World Cup: Liga MX leaves the party
After Colombia’s elimination by Switzerland, Mexico’s elite domestic league no longer has any representatives at the 2026 World Cup.
On Tuesday, Colombia’s 2026 World Cup run came to an end after a penalty-shootout loss to Switzerland, officially closing the curtain on the tournament for all Liga MX players.
How the World Cup’s Liga MX stars bowed out:
The first Liga MX representatives to bow out were the Uruguayans. Brian Rodríguez and Sebastián Cáceres saw their World Cup campaigns end following the group stage.
In the round of 32, Pedro Vite and Enner Valencia exited the tournament after Ecuador was eliminated in a loss to Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.
Then, in the round of 16, the majority of Liga MX-based players said goodbye to the World Cup when Mexico was knocked out by England.
Despite Mexico’s exit, several El Tri players boosted their stock with strong performances throughout the tournament. A number of them have already attracted interest from clubs in Europe, raising the possibility that they may not return to Liga MX.
A day later, Alejandro Zendejas also saw his World Cup journey come to an end when the United States fell to Belgium in the round of 16 in Seattle.
This Tuesday, Colombia became the latest team to be eliminated after falling to Switzerland, meaning Willer Ditta and Camilo Vargas have officially brought their campaigns to a close.
