How Iran could avoid going to the United States in the round of 32
Iran could avoid playing in the United States if it advances as one of the best third-placed teams at the World Cup.
Iran’s national team still has hopes of reaching the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup, and one detail of the schedule could prove decisive on both sporting and political fronts: if it advances as one of the best third-placed teams, it could play its next match in Vancouver, Canada, avoiding entry into U.S. territory.
Iran finished the group stage third in Group G and now depends on results from other groups to determine whether it will be among the eight best third-placed teams to progress to the knockout stage. The team drew all three of its matches: 2–2 against New Zealand, 0–0 against Belgium and 1–1 against Egypt.
Under the competition regulations and the 2026 World Cup bracket, the venues for the round-of-32 matches depend on the combination of third-placed teams that qualify. In certain scenarios, the third-placed team from Group G would be assigned to a match at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada, allowing it to avoid playing at any of the tournament’s venues in the United States.
The possibility carries added significance given the diplomatic tensions between Iran and the United States. Although FIFA determines the tournament schedule in advance, Iran’s potential qualification as one of the best third-placed teams could allow its World Cup run to continue on Canadian soil, at least for the first knockout round.
For now, the team coached by Amir Ghalenoei must wait until the group stage concludes to learn whether it secures one of the available spots, as well as its opponent and the final venue for its round-of-32 match. The qualification permutations remain open and depend on the results of the tournament’s remaining games. Iran has been based in Tijuana, Mexico, during the tournament.
