Update:

The 2026 World Cup knockout bracket is officially set, and while the United States and Canada are both still alive, fans hoping for a rivalry showdown will need to be patient.

Why the USMNT and Canada can’t meet early

Despite both being co-hosts and regional rivals, the United States and Canada were placed on opposite sides of the knockout bracket. That means a Round of 32 or even Round of 16 matchup is no longer possible. Instead, the structure of the bracket ensures that the earliest the two teams can meet is the semifinals.

The USMNT’s path to a Canada matchup

The United States opens the knockout stage against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32. If the they advance, they would face the winner of Belgium vs. Senegal in the Round of 16, a difficult matchup regardless of opponent.

From there, a potential quarterfinal opponent would come from a group that includes teams like Portugal, Spain, and Croatia, depending on how results unfold. The U.S. would need to win three straight knockout matches to reach the semifinals.

Canada’s path to a Canada vs. USA showdown

Canada’s route is just as challenging. They begin the Round of 32 against South Africa. If they advance, they would face the winner of Netherlands vs. Morocco in the Round of 16.

A potential quarterfinal could then bring an even tougher opponent, depending on how that side of the bracket develops. Like the U.S., Canada must win three consecutive knockout matches to reach the final four.

When and where the matchup could happen

If both teams navigate their way through the bracket, they would meet in the semifinals on July 14.

The match is scheduled to be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, a fitting stage for what would be one of the biggest matches in CONCACAF history.

While the U.S. has traditionally dominated the rivalry, Canada has closed the gap significantly over the past decade. Matches between the two sides have become increasingly competitive, with Canada earning several notable wins in recent years and emerging as a legitimate force in the region.

A World Cup semifinal would easily be the biggest meeting between the two nations, surpassing Gold Cup finals and Nations League clashes.

Of course, none of this is guaranteed. Both teams face tricky Round of 32 matchups. The expanded 48-team format has introduced more variety and more potential for upsets, meaning even the favorites are far from safe. But if both teams do keep the momentum going, the possibility remains alive. And if it happens, it would be a place in the World Cup final on the line.
