Brazil vs France: international friendly preview

Winners of seven men’s World Cups between them - five for Brazil, two for France - the teams are meeting for the first time in over a decade. They have not crossed paths since March 2015, when goals by Oscar, Neymar and Luis Gustavo earned the Brazilians a 3-1 victory in a Paris friendly. The teams’ last competitive matchup is a further nine years back: a 1-0 win for France in the 2006 World Cup quarterfinals.

Drawn in Group I at this year’s World Cup - with Senegal, Norway and one of Bolivia, Iraq or Suriname - the French will be back at Gillette Stadium on Jun. 26, when they face the Norwegians in their final round-robin game. What’s more, Les Bleus are set to establish their World Cup base in Massachusetts, using the training facilities at Babson College in Wellesley, just outside Boston.

Having returned from injury for Real Madrid last week, Kylian Mbappé headlines Didier Deschamps’ squad for a double-header of U.S. friendlies: after facing Brazil on Thursday, Les Bleus move on to a Landover, Maryland clash with Colombia on Sunday, Mar. 29. Deschamps, who is expected to be replaced by former Madrid boss Zinédine Zidane after the World Cup, arrives in the U.S. with Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé also in his travelling party. The Paris Saint-Germain forward is back for France after injury ruled him out of November’s internationals. Crystal Palace’s uncapped Maxence Lacroix is the only new face on Deschamps’ roster.

Meanwhile, Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti travels to the States without the once more-overlooked Neymar, but has handed a recall to Lyon’s on-loan Real Madrid forward Endrick Felipe. Ancelotti, whose team also takes on Croatia in Orlando, Florida on Sunday, has picked a roster that features maiden call-ups for defenders Léo Pereira and Kaiki, for midfielder Gabriel Sara, and for two Premier League forwards in Brentford’s Igor Thiago and Bournemouth’s Rayan.

Ranked at No. 5 in the world, two places behind France, the Brazilians have been drawn in Group C at the 2026 World Cup, along with Haiti, Morocco and Scotland.
