Takefusa Kubo was forced to leave Japan’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands earlier than expected after a heavy collision with Denzel Dumfries left him unable to continue.

The incident occurred in the 71st minute, at a crucial stage of the game, when the Real Sociedad winger tried to cut inside in midfield. Dumfries challenged aggressively and, although he got a touch on the ball first, his knee made significant contact with Kubo’s.

What happened to Japan’s Kubo?

Referee Anthony Taylor allowed play to continue, but the impact left the Japanese star in obvious discomfort.

There are initial concerns that Kubo may have suffered a knee sprain.

Just minutes later, Daichi Kamada scored the late equalizer that secured a 2-2 draw for Japan. Kubo emerged from the bench to celebrate with his teammates, but was clearly struggling. He was seen with an ice pack strapped to the injured knee and was putting weight only on his right leg.

After the final whistle, the La Liga attacker appeared in better spirits. He walked off the field under his own power, moving more comfortably and showing fewer signs of pain. Kubo even stopped to acknowledge supporters near the tunnel as Japan celebrated an important point.

However, a photograph later shared by journalist Alberto Fernández showed Kubo leaving the stadium in a wheelchair, further fueling concerns over the severity of the injury.

Japan’s next World Cup match is scheduled for June 21, giving Kubo a week to recover.

Medical tests over the coming hours are expected to determine whether the injury is simply a deep bruise or, in the worst-case scenario, damage to the inside of his left knee.
