Messi receives injury update ahead of World Cup opener
The 8-time Ballon d’Or winner is currently recovering from an injury.
The Sun of May sits inside the two light blue bands across the white background of Argentina’s famous flag. Its design is a replica of an engraving on the first Argentine coin, approved way back in 1813. The face itself has quite chubby cheeks, if I am allowed an observation. Also, if I can suggest a change, someone could perhaps give it a little smile. Nothing teethy, just maybe a bit more Mona Lisa. Normally such a suggestion would be batted off without any further comment, but once you read the good news about Lionel Messi, all of Argentina will be smiling a little more. And while you’ve got your pen out, give it a bum chin.
The attacker has been out of action since late May due to a hamstring issue, but recent reports suggest that his recovery period is coming to an end and the medical staff have even given him the green light to see some minutes on the pitch against Iceland in what is Argentina’s final game before taking on the challenge of defending their World Cup title.
“Leo is doing well”
Added to the fitness of their ageing star is the fitness of their young sparrow, Nico Paz. The 21-year-old will be available for Tuesday’s warm-up game against Iceland in Auburn, Alabama, and is set to provide a huge boost to Lionel Scaloni’s squad. His knee injury is finally something of the past and he completed his first full session with the Albiceleste on Sunday.
“Leo is doing well,” Scaloni revealed in a press conference last Friday. “Leo trained for a part with the group, which is important. He’s not fully separated; he’s coming along. He may be part of the friendly matches, getting some minutes in these two friendlies. We’ll see if it’s the one tomorrow or the next one. But he’s doing a lot better and that gives us tranquility.”
Argentina’s group at the World Cup consists of Algeria (June 17, Kansas City MO), Austria (June 22, Arlington TX), and Jordan (June 28, Arlington TX).
