The Ecuadorian federation wants world soccer’s governing body to investigate incidents before and during the knockout match.
Mexico FIFA investigation demand by Ecuador after controversial World Cup exit
Ecuador’s elimination at the hands of Mexico in the World Cup continues to generate controversy off the field. Days after the match, the Ecuadorian Football Federation confirmed in an official statement that it has filed a formal complaint with FIFA requesting an investigation into a number of incidents that took place before and during the game.
The federation said the request is intended to determine whether any circumstances may have compromised the safety of its supporters and players during the match. Without disclosing specific details of the alleged incidents, the organization stressed that it had chosen the appropriate institutional process and expects FIFA to carry out a thorough review of everything that occurred.
Safety at the center of Ecuador’s complaint
In its statement, the federation said it had submitted “a formal complaint to FIFA, requesting a detailed investigation into the events that occurred before and during the match, including all those that may have compromised the safety of our supporters and players.”
It added that the complaint represents "the proper and official channel to clarify any situation related to a match of this magnitude."
Changes underway after World Cup elimination
The federation also used the statement to address the national team’s future. It confirmed that, in the coming weeks, it will meet with clubs and regional associations to present a transparent report on the financial management of the World Cup campaign and gather feedback from stakeholders across Ecuadorian soccer.
In addition, it announced that the process of hiring the national team’s next head coach has already begun, describing the appointment as a top priority and part of a medium- and long-term sporting project.
While FIFA reviews Ecuador’s complaint, the federation is also looking to move forward after the World Cup exit. Its closing message focused on rebuilding, expressing confidence that the development of emerging talent, combined with the experience of the team’s veteran players, will help create a stronger and more competitive squad. Before turning the page completely, however, Ecuador hopes to receive answers about everything that unfolded in the match that ended its World Cup campaign.
