Nathaniel Brown, the Germany star who rejected the USMNT
A German player with an American father, Brown has started both Die Mannschaft’s games at the 2026 World Cup, scoring in a 7-1 rout of Curaçao.
One of the brightest young talents in the Germany national team, Nathaniel Brown represents a major “what if” for the United States at World Cup 2026.
Bayern move looms as Brown nets on World Cup bow
Brown’s father is American, making him eligible to represent the USMNT. Instead, the defender chose Germany - and on June 14 he marked his World Cup debut in style, starring in his team’s 7-1 victory over Curaçao. In 72 minutes on the field in Houston, Brown bagged a goal and an assist against the Caribbean side.
“It’s incredible to score in my first World Cup match,” Brown said after the game. “My family and friends are here. We scored seven goals. Of course, we conceded an unnecessary goal, but I think it helped wake us up.”
The Eintracht Frankfurt star then featured for the full 90 on matchday two, helping Germany to seal knockout-stage qualification - as Group E winners - with a 2-1 victory over the Ivory Coast.
At just 22 years old, Brown is not only living out his dream of playing in a World Cup for Germany; he’s also set to join Bayern Munich this summer. The Bavarian giants are reportedly preparing a €55 million ($62 million) move for the full-back, who has played for Eintracht since 2024.
No Germany doubts for Brown
Despite his American roots, Brown has said he never seriously considered representing the United States.
“For me, it was clear that I only wanted to play for Germany because I was born in Germany and grew up with my mother,” he explained before Die Mannshaft’s pre-World Cup friendly against the USMNT in early June.
Brown also told German newspaper Bild in April that he received a call from U.S. Soccer, but quickly declined the opportunity because his ambition had always been to represent Germany.
One of the key reasons behind that decision is his limited connection to the United States. Brown has previously stated that he does not have contact with his father.
