Oops: Argentina President Javier Milei’s programmed message on Twitter that he forgot to delete
Milei skipped the World Cup final because of superstition, but a forgotten social media post created an awkward moment.
Argentina President Javier Milei surprisingly opted not to attend his nation’s 2026 World Cup final against Spain because of cábalas, the rigid, deeply embedded system of soccer superstitions that governs life in the South American country.
“Under no circumstances am I breaking the routine,” Milei told local radio station El Observador, before explaining that he had watched all seven of La Albiceleste’s victories in the tournament from the exact same spot inside the Olivos presidential residence in Buenos Aires.
Milei stuck with his World Cup superstition
Argentina’s perfect 7-0 streak finally came to an end in New Jersey, with Ferran Torres scoring the only goal for Spain in the second half of extra time.
But in addition to not traveling to the game, Milei’s activity on X suggests he may have missed the final altogether.
Of course, the president himself may not be aware, but somebody within his team could soon be on the receiving end of a telling off for a scheduled tweet going out when it should have been deleted.

“WORLD CUP CELEBRATION,” Milei’s message begins. “Given the public concern regarding celebrations for the achievement reached by the Argentine national team, I inform the population that, depending on the decision made by the players and coaching staff regarding the day on which they wish to celebrate, that day will be declared a national holiday.”

At the time of writing early on Monday, the post was still visible on X hours after it was published.
Sadly for Milei, Argentina and all Argentinians, it is Spain and fans of La Roja who are gearing up for a huge World Cup celebration in the heart of Madrid, with an open-top bus parade set to crawl its way through the mobbed streets of the Spanish capital.
