Thomas Christiansen’s future with Panama is up in the air
Panama will say goodbye to the World Cup this Saturday when they face England in New Jersey, a match that could mark Christiansen’s farewell.
The Panama national team will play its final match of the World Cup this Saturday, when it faces England in search of its first-ever World Cup point and, in the process, a chance to avenge what happened in Russia 2018, when the English side handed them a painful defeat.
With no hopes of reaching the next round and knowing this will be their final game of the tournament, Panama is already looking ahead to what comes after the World Cup, particularly regarding the future of the Thomas Christiansen project, which has been the main driving force behind Panama’s progress in CONCACAF.
At the pre-match press conference ahead of the clash with England, Christiansen was asked about his continuity as head coach of the Canal Zone side for the next World Cup cycle. However, the Spanish coach left his future uncertain.
“I have one last match with the national team in this World Cup, and as of June 30, we’ll see what happens. On June 30, we will go to Panama, and then it will be discussed,” Christiansen explained.
Despite Panama’s early elimination from the tournament, the coach said he was proud of his players and the attitude they displayed throughout the World Cup.
“I am proud of how we competed in this World Cup. It is a very recognisable Panama, one that is clear about things, that has commitment, courage and personality. And it can look any team in the face,” he added.
