When was the last time Argentina didn’t get past the Round of 16 at the World Cup?
Argentina faced a tough battle against Egypt in the World Cup Round of 16 on Tuesday, July 7.

Argentina found themselves 2-0 down against Egypt in the World Cup this afternoon, only to battle back to 3-2 in time added on at the end of the match to clinch one of the great comebacks of all time.
Had Egypt held on to eliminate Argentina, it would have handed the reigning champions their earliest World Cup exit since France knocked Lionel Messi and company out in the Round of 16 in Russia eight years ago. Before that, Argentina had not fallen at that stage since Romania’s famous upset at USA 1994.
The last time Argentina failed to get past the Round of 16 was at the 2018 World Cup, when they lost 4-3 to France in Kazan. That defeat ended a chaotic tournament for Argentina and sent France on their way to winning the trophy.
Before 2018, Argentina’s previous Round of 16 exit came in 1994, when Romania beat them 3-2 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. That remains one of the most famous knockout upsets in World Cup history.
Argentina’s recent World Cup record
| 1994 | Round of 16 |
| 1998 | Quarterfinals |
| 2002 | Group stage |
| 2006 | Quarterfinals |
| 2010 | Quarterfinals |
| 2014 | Runner-up |
| 2018 | Round of 16 |
| 2022 | Champions |
That means Argentina have reached at least the quarterfinals in five of the last seven World Cups. The only exceptions in that span were their group-stage exit in 2002 and their Round of 16 defeat to France in 2018.
