Who is Team Canada head coach Jesse Marsch and has he ever been offered the USMNT coaching job?
Canada play Bosnia and Herzegovinia in their first game of the 2026 World Cup on Friday, 12 June.

There is something unusual about Canada’s head coach at the 2026 World Cup: he’s American.
Jesse Marsch, born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, is the man tasked with leading Canada on home soil this summer. His team opens its Group B campaign against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday, June 12 at 3 p.m. ET at Toronto Stadium in Toronto. Switzerland and Qatar complete a group that many observers believe gives Canada a genuine chance of reaching the knockout rounds for the first time in its history.
Canadian coach, the American Marsch
Marsch arrived in Canada with a reputation as one of the most accomplished American coaches of his generation. Yet his path to the World Cup began not in the dugout, but on the field.
A midfielder, Marsch played college soccer at Princeton University before being selected by D.C. United in the 1996 MLS College Draft. He went on to enjoy a 13-year professional playing career in Major League Soccer, representing D.C. United, Chicago Fire and Chivas USA. During that time he won multiple MLS trophies and established himself as one of the league’s most respected players.
How did Marsch get into coaching?
His coaching career began shortly after retirement. Marsch joined Bob Bradley’s United States coaching staff and was part of the setup during the 2010 World Cup. He then became the first head coach in the history of the Montreal Impact before moving to the New York Red Bulls in 2015. There, he developed the aggressive pressing style that would become his trademark.
That success opened the door to the Red Bull football network in Europe. Marsch worked under influential coach Ralf Rangnick at RB Leipzig before taking charge of Red Bull Salzburg in Austria. His two seasons in Salzburg were highly successful, producing consecutive league and cup doubles and helping establish him as one of the leading American coaches working abroad.
He later returned to RB Leipzig as head coach before moving to Leeds United in the Premier League. Marsch spent just under a year in charge at Elland Road, becoming the longest-serving American manager in Premier League history. While his tenure ended in early 2023, it further raised his profile on both sides of the Atlantic.
Canada appointed Marsch as head coach in May 2024, just weeks before the Copa América. He became the first American to lead the Canadian men’s national team.
The partnership has proved successful. Under Marsch, Canada reached the semifinals of the 2024 Copa América and entered the World Cup with growing confidence. His high-energy pressing system has been a natural fit for a squad featuring players such as Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David. Since taking charge, Canada has climbed the FIFA rankings and produced a record of 12 wins, 12 draws and five defeats in his first 29 matches.
Marsch has also embraced his adopted country. Before the World Cup he traveled across Canada meeting supporters and learning about the nation’s culture. In recent months he has become a popular figure among Canadian fans, frequently speaking about what he sees as the country’s values and identity.
Has Jesse Marsch ever been offered the USMNT job?
The answer depends on who you ask, but Marsch clearly believes he came extremely close.
After being fired by Leeds United in February 2023, Marsch emerged as one of the leading candidates to replace Gregg Berhalter as head coach of the U.S. men’s national team. According to Marsch, he was so confident he would get the position that he walked away from a lucrative offer from Leicester City.
Marsch has since claimed that senior figures within U.S. Soccer encouraged him not to take the Leicester job because he was under consideration for the national team role. However, in a dramatic twist, U.S. Soccer ultimately decided to rehire Berhalter in June 2023.
The decision left Marsch deeply disappointed. He later said he felt the opportunity had been “pulled” from him after believing he was the frontrunner for the position.
Berhalter’s second spell did not last. Following a disappointing Copa América campaign in 2024, U.S. Soccer dismissed him and eventually turned to former Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur coach Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine now leads the United States into the 2026 World Cup.
As a result, one of the tournament’s most intriguing storylines is that an American coach who once expected to lead the USMNT is instead trying to guide Canada to its first World Cup victory.
