Update:

As England get ready for one of their biggest games in decades, stopping Lionel Messi remains the challenge hanging over everything.

Or at least that’s the narrative.

Even at 39, the Argentine captain is still seen to be capable of deciding a World Cup semifinal with one flash of genius, one dribble or one perfectly weighted pass. Quality over quantity.

Fans know him by plenty of names: the GOAT, Leo, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner. But perhaps none has stuck quite like ‘La Pulga’. It’s a nickname that has followed him from dusty youth fields in Rosario all the way to 2022 World Cup glory and, now, another shot at reaching the final.

Why is Lionel Messi called ‘La Pulga’?

The answer goes all the way back to Messi’s childhood in Rosario, Argentina.

‘La Pulga’ simply translates to “The Flea.” At first glance it doesn’t sound particularly flattering, but it quickly became a badge of affection rather than an insult.

Growing up, Messi was much smaller than almost every other kid he played against. His older brothers and friends reportedly began calling him “La Pulgita” (“Little Flea”) because of his tiny size and the way he buzzed around the field. He was incredibly difficult to catch, constantly darting between defenders with quick changes of direction that reminded them of a flea jumping from place to place.

As Messi got older, the nickname naturally shortened from La Pulgita to La Pulga, and it has stayed with him throughout one of the greatest careers soccer has ever seen.

Did Messi’s growth problems influence the nickname?

In a way, yes.

Messi was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency as a child, something that contributed to him being noticeably shorter than many of his teammates and opponents. While the nickname actually predates his move to Barcelona, his small stature made it even more fitting as he climbed through the ranks.

What made the nickname memorable, though, wasn’t just his height.

Opponents quickly discovered that the little boy everyone called “The Flea” was almost impossible to pin down. He could wriggle out of tackles, squeeze through impossibly tight spaces and accelerate before defenders even realized what had happened.

Those qualities became his trademark at Newell’s Old Boys, then Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Miami and, of course, Argentina. They also helped turn a playful childhood nickname into one recognized by soccer fans across the world.

Today, La Pulga is as much a part of Messi’s identity as the No. 10 shirt. It’s a reminder that long before he became a World Cup winner and one of the most decorated players in history, he was simply a tiny kid in Rosario weaving through defenders while everyone wondered how on earth they were supposed to swat him.
