Wildfires cast a shadow over the 2026 World Cup final

The 2026 World Cup final is set, with Spain taking on defending champions Argentina, who are aiming to retain their title. However, wildfires in Canada continue to affect air quality in New Jersey, the host state for the tournament’s showpiece match.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced on X that smoke from the Canadian wildfires will continue to impact air quality across the state.

“Smoke from Canadian wildfires will continue to impact air quality across New Jersey today. I encourage all residents, especially members of sensitive groups, to limit outdoor activities. If you do go outside, please stay hydrated and take precautions. Please check on your neighbors, especially seniors and those with underlying health conditions,” she wrote.

The conditions could affect both national teams, which are scheduled to begin training in New Jersey tomorrow as they prepare for Sunday’s final.

Despite the current air quality concerns, Sherrill is already looking ahead to the World Cup final, which will be played at New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, July 19, at 3:00 p.m. ET (2:00 p.m. CT and 12:00 p.m. PT).

“We are excited to welcome Spain and Argentina to New Jersey for the World Cup Final this Sunday! In just four days, one in three people across the globe will tune in to watch the final match take place right here in the Garden State,” she wrote yesterday following Argentina’s victory over England.

New Jersey has hosted seven matches during the tournament: five in the group stage and two in the knockout rounds. Neither Spain nor Argentina have played at the venue during this World Cup.
