World Cup 2026: Why Mexico has already clinched first place in Group A
El Tri will play their Round of 32 match at Estadio Ciudad de México on June 30.
Two matchdays are in the books for Group A at the 2026 World Cup, and Mexico has officially secured the top spot. Thanks to a gritty 1-0 victory over South Korea, El Tri clinched first place in the group, guaranteeing their Round of 32 match will take place on home soil in Mexico City. Meanwhile, on Thursday morning in Atlanta, South Africa and the Czechia battled to a 1-1 draw. While both squads earned their first point of the tournament, the result severely complicates their chances of survival in the tournament.
As a reminder of how the group shook out on Matchday 1, Javier Aguirre’s squad opened with a 2-0 win over South Africa, while the Czechs dropped a 2-1 decision to South Korea. Those results leave Mexico firmly on top with 6 points, South Korea in second with 3, and the Czechia and South Africa trailing with one point apiece.
Group A play wraps up on June 24. Aguirre’s men will square off against the Czechia at Estadio Ciudad de México, while the South Koreans head to Monterrey to face South Africa. So far, Julián Quiñones, Raúl Jiménez, and Luis Romo have accounted for El Tri’s three goals in the tournament.
Tiebreaker Rules
Even if South Korea blows out South Africa on the final matchday and Mexico falls to the Czechia, top spot in the group will not change. Under FIFA’s current tiebreaker rules, the head-to-head result takes precedence, locking Mexico into first place.
As the Group A winners, El Tri will play their Round of 32 match at Estadio Ciudad de México on June 30 against one of the best third-placed teams from Groups C, E, F, H, or I. Meanwhile, the Group A runners-up will head to Los Angeles, California, on June 28 to face the second-place team from Group B.
