Canada makes World Cup history but loses Ismaël Koné to tournament-ending injury
A standout performance from Cyle Larin and Jonathan David powered Canada to a historic World Cup victory in front of its home fans in Vancouver.

It took eight World Cup matches, but Canada finally secured what will likely go down as the most significant and memorable victory in the nation’s history. After drawing against Bosnia and once again playing in front of a packed home crowd in Vancouver, Jesse Marsch’s side earned its first-ever World Cup win, defeating a Qatar team that had little go its way and found itself battling against the odds from the outset.
However, what began as a celebration for Canada ended on a sour note, as Ismaël Koné suffered an injury that has ended his participation in the World Cup.
Just 17 minutes into the match, Cyle Larin got the party started. After a poor clearance from Qatari goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada, the Canadian striker reacted quickest to tap the ball into the net and score his second goal of the tournament.
The breakthrough gave Jesse Marsch’s team the confidence it needed to take control of the match and produce one of its most complete performances. That dominance paid off again in the 29th minute when Jonathan David doubled the lead. Following an effort from Tajon Buchanan, David unleashed a powerful right-footed strike that left Abunada with no chance.
Canada’s first half could hardly have gone any better. Rather than easing off after taking control, the hosts continued to push forward in search of more goals. The game tilted even further in their favor in the 33rd minute when referee showed the first of two red cards. Hamam Ahmed was sent off for a challenge on Tajon Buchanan, leaving Julen Lopetegui’s side at a disadvantage. Despite tactical adjustments, including the introduction of Sultan Al Brake, Qatar could not prevent Canada from finding a third goal before halftime.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Jonathan David grabbed his second of the night. After a superb delivery and a mishit attempt from Cyle Larin, David was on hand to finish and put Canada firmly on course for its first World Cup victory.
From celebration to frustration for Canada
The second half initially looked set to become the perfect continuation of Canada’s celebrations, but a heavy challenge by Assim Madebo on Ismaël Koné cast a shadow over the occasion. The Canadian attacker suffered a fracture to his lower leg and left the field to applause from teammates, opponents, and supporters alike, while Madebo became the second player sent off in the match.

Reduced to nine men, Qatar was completely overwhelmed by a Canadian side that appeared determined to channel its emotions into more goals, dedicating them to Koné.
Nathan Saliba made it 4-0 with an outstanding free kick, prompting an emotional celebration as the Canadian players gathered together and held up Ismaël Koné’s jersey.
The fifth goal arrived through Jacob Shaffelburg. The LAFC player had only been on the field for a matter of minutes when he found the net, albeit with a bit of luck as his shot took a deflection and was ultimately recorded as an own goal.
But Canada was not finished yet. Jonathan David completed his hat trick to cap off a remarkable night and seal a historic Canadian victory.
With the result, Canada controls its own destiny in the group. A draw against Switzerland would be enough to send Marsch’s side through to the Round of 32, avoiding the need to rely on tiebreakers or other results to secure qualification.
