The club that has given Mexico the most World Cup goals – and it’s not América
Luis Romo’s winner against South Korea not only secured Mexico’s place atop Group A, but also strengthened a unique World Cup legacy.

Luis Romo scored the goal that gave Mexico a 1-0 victory over South Korea in Group A action at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Chivas midfielder found the net at Estadio Guadalajara to secure first place in the group and, in the process, helped strengthen the club’s standing as the Mexican team with the most goals scored by its players in World Cup history.
According to statistics expert Mr. Chip, nine different Guadalajara players have scored in World Cups, combining for 13 goals across the tournament’s history. That total places Chivas ahead of Necaxa, whose players have contributed seven goals, and Club América, whose representatives have scored six. Players from Pumas have added five goals in FIFA World Cup competition.

Chivas’ World Cup goalscorers
Tomás Balcázar scored once at Switzerland 1954. Isidoro Díaz and Héctor Hernández each found the net at Chile 1962. Javier Valdivia contributed two goals at Mexico 1970, while Víctor Rangel added one at Argentina 1978.
The club’s World Cup tradition continued with Fernando Quirarte, who scored twice at Mexico 1986, and Omar Bravo, who matched that tally at Germany 2006. Javier Hernández added one goal at South Africa 2010, and now Luis Romo has joined the list with his strike at Mexico 2026.
Mexico still has more opportunities to add to the record
Mexico’s goals at the 2026 tournament have been scored by Julián Quiñones, Raúl Jiménez and Romo. The team still has one remaining group-stage game, scheduled for June 24 against the Czech Republic, giving players another chance to add to the scoring totals.
Javier Aguirre’s squad has already qualified for the Round of 32, and optimism continues to grow among supporters as the tournament progresses.

Chivas could widen the gap over other Liga MX clubs
Mexico has guaranteed itself at least two more games in Mexico City, including the meeting with the Czech Republic and a knockout-round appearance. That means Chivas players could continue contributing goals and extending the club’s lead over its domestic rivals.
With attacking options such as Roberto Alvarado, Armando “Hormiga” González and Romo available, Guadalajara has a realistic opportunity to increase its historic advantage and further cement its connection to Mexico’s World Cup success.
