World Cup concern growing: New York now a health threat

The rain forecast for Saturday in the New York area could prove to be a crucial ally in ensuring the 2026 World Cup final goes ahead without any threat of postponement, despite the dense haze blanketing the region as a result of multiple wildfires burning across Canada. While rainfall will not eliminate the problem entirely, it can help improve conditions and reduce some of the impact, though it is far from a complete solution.

Rather than easing, the situation has worsened overnight, and authorities are warning that air quality has reached levels considered harmful to human health. As of the early hours of Friday morning, the official advisory left little room for doubt, noting that the current air quality leaves everyone vulnerable to health issues, with sensitive groups of particular concern.

Exactly how bad is the air quality?

The primary concern comes from fine particulate matter known as PM2.5. According to health officials, these microscopic particles are capable of entering the bloodstream. Air quality has reached an index reading of 185, roughly 20 times worse than on a typical day, and residents are already being advised to wear face masks when venturing outdoors.

The Air Quality Index runs on a scale from 0 to 500. Readings above 100 are considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, while levels exceeding 150 are deemed unhealthy for the general population and can disrupt everyday activities. Anything above 200 is classified as very unhealthy.

At present, New York’s air quality has deteriorated to levels that pose a risk to everyone, regardless of age or health status. The immediate concern centers on Friday’s two training sessions and a legends match, all of which are scheduled to take place outdoors.
