Just days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, concerns over security emerged in Kansas City after a shooting a few miles from England’s team base camp prompted a major law enforcement response in the city, which is set to host several tournament matches.

The shooting, which left at least nine people injured, triggered an overnight emergency response from local police and public safety officials. According to reports, gunfire erupted around 4 a.m. Central Time on Saturday, June 6.

Where did the shooting happen in Kansas City?

The incident took place along Troost Avenue, just minutes from England’s World Cup training base. The shooting left multiple people injured and led to a significant police presence in the area.

Troost Avenue is one of Kansas City’s busiest corridors, linking downtown with the southern parts of the city.

Authorities increase security around World Cup teams

According to local authorities, all nine victims were transported to area hospitals. Their conditions have not yet been publicly disclosed, although initial reports indicated that none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Missouri authorities have launched an investigation into the shooting and said enhanced security measures will be put in place for all national teams staying in the region during the World Cup.

In addition to England, Kansas City is expected to serve as a training base for Argentina, the Netherlands and Algeria, making security a key priority as teams finalize preparations for the tournament.
