Wrexham’s chances of historic fourth consecutive promotion hang by a thread

The Red Dragons go into the final three games of the season just two points and one position outside a play-off place.

Update:

Three consecutive promotions have taken Wrexham from the National League to the EFL Championship and the side from North Wales are still currently in the thick of the promotion race with a place in the Premier League on the line.

No team in English football history has ever achieved four consecutive promotions to reach the Premier League. Wrexham are currently attempting to become the first to do so with the club now boasting global support since Hollywood stars Rob Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney took control at the struggling side back in 2021.

All to play for in final games

With automatic promotion no longer mathematically possible, Wrexham’s chance of playing in the top flight next season boil down to securing a top six berth and a place in the playoffs.

However, Phil Parkinson’s side side in seventh place and their destiny is no longer in their own hands with Hull City sitting in the final playoff spot (sixth position).

To secure promotion, Wrexham must first leapfrog Hull City to finish in 6th place. This would enter them into a four-team knockout tournament (5th vs 6th and 3rd vs 4th) with the final held at Wembley.

Wrexham is 2 points behind Hull but a better goal difference for the Red Dragons (+5 vs +4) would mean that if both teams finish level on points with Hull, they would likely take the spot.

Final three games

Wrexham face lowly Oxford United away on Tuesday night with Hull facing fellow strugglers Leicester City.

The run-in for the Tigers is arguably easier ‘on paper’ as they face Norwich City and Charlton with Wrexham taking on promoted Coventry City and wrapping up the season at home to Middlesbrough.

Wrexham have defied many sceptics even being in this race — in their first Championship season ever which is historic for the club. But the final step to the playoffs will require both a big finish and luck and it may transpire that Parkinson’s side fall short at the final hurdle.
