Wrexham’s Reynolds and McElhenney sell stake to Atlético Madrid owners
The Welsh club have sold a minority stake to Apollo, the owners of Atlético Madrid.

Wrexham have sold a stake in the club to American asset management firm Apollo Sports Capital (ASC), making the new owners of Atlético Madrid minority shareholders in the Championship side.
The deal, struck in December last year, is set to give Wrexham improved funding for the redevelopment of their Stok Cae Ras stadium plans.
Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will remain as controlling owners of the Championship club.

“Wrexham is on an incredible journey, we are thrilled to be part of it”
In a joint statement, Reynolds and McElhenney said: “The dream has always been to take this club to the Premier League while staying true to the town. Growth like that takes world-class partners who share our vision and ambition, and Apollo absolutely does.”
Apollo Partner and Co-Portfolio Manager of ASC Lee Solomon said, “Wrexham is on an incredible journey, and we are thrilled to be a part of it and to support the Club, the Wrexham community and Rob and Ryan. This is a multi-faceted investment where Apollo Sports Capital can provide long-term, patient capital to help Wrexham reach its goals and to contribute to the ongoing revitalization of the facilities and local economy.”
ASC are majority owners of LaLiga side Atlético Madrid, and bought into the club in November last year, with the acquisition of the stakes in the Welsh club another step in their expansion into European football. Miguel Ángel Gil and Enrique Cerezo remain in charge of the 11-time LaLiga champions.

At the time of writing, Wrexham sit in 6th place in the Championship, England’s second division, and are in the playoffs on goal difference. For the newly-promoted side, the dream of getting to the Premier League continues to grow and the expanded financial backing will only give them more of a chance to compete in the gruelling 46-game season in the league that many call the most difficult outside the top 5 major European divisions.
