Sarina Weigman’s England side take on Australia in a pre-World Cup friendly at Wembley Stadium on 11 April. The Lionesses last faced off against Australia in October 2018 when Fran Kirby scored in a 1-1 draw. Australia were unbeaten in their last 4 coming into this game, having beaten South Africa, Denmark, Sweden and Thailand. However, a 0-1 loss to Scotland in London last Friday reminded them that they are not to get complacent ahead of the World Cup on home soil.

USWNT star Alex Morgan declared England one of the favourites in a recent interview, so the pressure is clearly on the Lionesses to top their continental victory and go one further, especially after their impressive Finalíssima win over Brazil. They will play Denmark, Haiti and China in the group stage, which will be no easy task.

Preview

Thanks to their strong performances, Australia are back in the top ten of the latest World Rankings from FIFA, and given that they have players such as Sam Kerr and Caitlin Foord, the only surprise is why they weren’t in there before. England, for their part, having just won the Euros, move up to 4th place. The squad is jam-packed full of talent that now knows how to succeed, so they will definitely be looking to regain that match-winning mentality before the tournament begins.

Prediction

I think this will be a hotly contested affair, but I can’t see England not coming away from the Wembley pitch without a win.
