Carlo Ancelotti’s men have little hope of catching Barcelona at the top of LaLiga but will be desperate to hold off city rivals Atlético Madrid to clinch second spot. Mid-table Celta Vigo, meanwhile, still have slim hopes of claiming a European spot.

Real Madrid vs Celta Vigo preview

Real Madrid focus on Champions League and Copa del Rey

In the first few months of the season, Real Madrid looked strong favourites to retain their league title. Poor form either side of the World Cup break, however, cost them dearly and means that now have next to no chance of catching Barcelona at the top of LaLiga. Carlo Ancelotti’s men have seen Atlético Madrid cut the gap significantly between second and third in the last few months and will be keen to fend off their city rivals.

With the league all but over, Madrid’s immediate focus is on the Champions League, with the game against Celta coming just four days after their quarter-final win over Chelsea. And with a midweek league game against Girona also coming up, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Ancelotti shuffle his pack once more, much like he did in the win away to Cádiz.

Celta safe in mid-table after fine form

Celta Vigo find themselves in no-man’s land in mid-table, a position they’ll be grateful for considering it looked as if they could find themselves in relegation danger earlier in the season. A run of only one defeat in 10 LaLiga matches between the end of January and the second week of April saw them ease away from the bottom three. Could they even mount a late push for a Europa League spot?

They won’t be relishing a trip to Estadio Santiago Bernabeú, though, as they haven’t won any of their last 13 matches against Los Blancos, losing nine of the last 10. Their last league win away to Madrid came in November 2006, although they did win in the Spanish capital in the Copa del Rey in January 2017.

Real Madrid vs Celta Vigo: prediction

Celta have been in really good form of late but it’s tough to bet against Real Madrid on home turf, even if they are likely to rest several of their star players.

Prediction: Real Madrid 2-1 Celta Vigo
