Luka Modric, Real Madrid’s Mr Nice Guy in midfield, quickly became persona non grata in Slovenia in the aftermath of Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Manchester City, as images of him insulting the match official, Damir Skomina, surfaced.

Cameras caught the irritated Croatian mouthing something deeply offensive at the referee: “I’m going to f**k your mother”.

So out of character was the former Tottenham man’s outburst that he was forced to beg for forgiveness from his manager, Zinedine Zidane, and the entire population of Slovenia (roughly two million inhabitants). First of all, I apologise to the referee Damir Skomina. And I also apologise to everyone, especially in Slovenia, who might have been offended by my vulgar reaction".

The incident which sparked the diminutive playmaker occurred towards the end of the dull one-sided match following a challenge on Cristiano Ronaldo. The number 19, who had already been subbed off, sprang from the bench when his Portuguese team-mate was fouled.
