Cristiano Ronaldo Ballon d'Or 2016

Cristiano Ronaldo was in jubilant mood after Portugal became the first team to secure a place in the Euro 2016 final, beating Wales 2-0 this evening in Lyon. The captain opened the scoring four minutes into the second half, and set up Nani to double the lead just moments later. Cristiano told Portuguese public broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP) that the team have never lost faith in the tournament and now he is a step closer to achieving a lifelong dream.

"This is something I've dreamed about right from the start. We knew that we had a long road ahead of us, but we have always been in the fight. We believed from the beginning, even when we were going through thropugh quite a complicated moment, but like I always say... you can start badly and end well", Cristiano told RTP after the game. "Our coach, these players, the medical department... they all deserve this. We still haven't won anything, but the dream's still alive".

The captain, who was elected Man of the Match and equalled Michel Platini's tournament goals record, is hoping that history is kinder to them than it was when they played and lost the 2004 final on home soil against Greece.

"I hope that this time we have something to smile about - or at least if there are tears they are tears of joy. It's a dream, I've always said it, to win something for Portugal. We are a little closer and I think that were going to win", he concluded.
