In an interview with Nature magazine, José Mourniho revealed that he had received other big offers before joining Manchester United as coach. “I could have gone to Italy or even Spain, but the Premier League is special,” assured the Portuguese manager.

"Here they want every club to compete...not like in other countries"

Mourinho also took the opportunity to launch some thinly-veiled criticism at Spanish football. “Here [in England] they want every club to be competitive, not like in other countries where the big clubs leave the rest behind.”

Last year, when Rafa Benítez started to become questioned as Real Madrid manager, Florentino Perez said that Mourinho wasn’t going to return to the Bernabéu that season, but left the door open for him to come back possibly this season, when it was unknown if Zidane would be a success or not. “About Mourinho,” said Perez, “The future can’t be foretold…he’s not coming back, for now.”
