ATLÉTICO 1 - BAYERN 0

German press hits out at Ancelotti's "first failure"

The Teutonic fourth estate got stuck into the Italian on Thursday morning after Atlético's victory. "Bayern were out of ideas," said Oliver Kahn.

The German press was far from amused by another defeat for Bayern on Spanish soil and dusted off their adjectives to aim at Carlo Ancelotti on Thursday morning.

Bild (Berlin) | "Ancelotti’s first failure"

“The Atlético nightmare continues for Bayern. There was no trace of revenge… Quite the opposite! The Vicente Calderón remains a stadium of horrors for Bayern […] Bayern offered nothing new in the second half. Instead, they were even lucky! Griezmann missed a penalty.”

TZ (Munich) | "Bayern fail in their search for revenge against Atlético"

Atlético remain Bayern’s bête noir […] Revenge failed! Bayern’s black run continues. Not even with Carlo Ancelotti could the team win in Spain. Of the last seven games [in Spain] Bayern have won only once […] The Italian fielded Bayern’s oldest team (29 years and 102 days average age) in 11 years. Rummenigge termed Atlético “the most difficult side in our group” and Atlético showed why.”

Süddeutsche Zeitung (Munich) | "1-0 again"

“Revenge is the ‘wrong word’ as Philipp Lahm said […] Bayern’s new starting 11 was the old one; eight players from last April 27 were in the line-up […] Bayern were nervous when building moves and lost too many balls.”

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (Frankfurt) | "Atlético quash Bayern’s chance of revenge"

“In the end the same thing happened as in the semi-finals: 1-0 to Atlético, the young adversary of the German champions […] The loss makes it difficult for Bayern to finish top of the group in the Champions League group stage as they have for the last seven years.”
