Spain's U17s cruise through to the quarter finals in Jordan

Spain into the quarter finals

Spain's Under-17s have booked their place in the quarter finals of the 2016 Women's World Cup but now face a showdown with Mexico to decide who finishes top of the group.

New Zealand tested Spain's patience in this afternoon's match in Irbid - after thrashing tournament hosts Jordan 6-0 in their opening game, Toña Is' team had to wait until the 80th minute to find an opening against a stubborn Kiwis defence.

But when it came, it was something special: Barcelona centre-back Laia Aleixandri lashed a fierce piledriver from a full 25 yards out that entered the top corner - one of the best goals seen in the tournament so far.

Pina on target again

Once the deadlock had been broken, fissures started to appear in the New Zealand defence and Spain doubled their lead on 85 minutes when Real Sociedad's Nerea Eizaguirre picked out substitute Claudia Pina with a threaded through ball, leaving the 15-year-old to skip past Anna Leat and tuck in the winner for her second goal in as many games.

Zero goals conceded, second on goal difference

Despite the win, Spain drop down to second in Group A on goal difference. They are level on points with Mexico who they meet at the King Abdullah II International Stadium on Friday to  contest top spot in the section going into next week's quarter finals in Amman.
