Javier Mascherano will sign a new deal at Barcelona next week, according to the club.

Mascherano to sign a one-year extension until 2019

The Argentinian, whose current deal expires in June 2018, will extend his stay at the club by another year until June 2019. The agreement was made some time ago, say reports, and has now been confirmed by Albert Soler, the club's Director of Professional Sports.

The contract will be signed on Monday afternoon at the club's Camp Nou offices at 1.00pm local time by both Mascherano himself and club president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

A defensive midfielder turned centre-back

The veteran midfielder joined Barcelona from Liverpool in 2010 and after initially struggling to break into Pep Guardiola's team has established himself as one of the club's most regular and consistent performers. Originally a defensive midfielder, his drop back into the centre of defence has provided Gerard Pique with a regular partner since the retirement of Carles Puyol and has added an element of grit and toughness to Barcelona's defensive spine.
