Maradona: “I’d have never betrayed Napoli like Higuaín did”
The club legend also hit out at Juventus in a homemade video: "My Napoli would have beaten them 4-0"
Sitting in his home in Dubai and wearing a rather loud set of pyjamas – a present for his 56th birthday – Diego Maradona has had his say on Napoli’s 2-1 loss to Juventus on Saturday night.
Maradona aims birthday swipe at Higuaín
Maradona sent out a message to Napoli fans, the club where he spent the best years of his illustrious if rollercoaster career, and aimed a jab at countryman Gonzalo Higuaín, who swapped Naples for Turin this summer in a high-profile and highly controversial €90 million move to Juventus.
“I want to thank all the Napoli fans who remembered my birthday,” he said in a home-made video. “I’ve received many messages. I never betrayed and never will betray the Napoli shirt. My heart will always be in Naples.”
“I don’t care what Higuaín did,” he continued. “Let him follow his own path. I don’t care.”
My Napoli could have put four past this Juventus side, says Maradona
'El Pelusa' told fans that he was sad and disappointed after Saturday’s game, saying that Napoli could have got something out of the game.
“I turned 56 with sadness because of Napoli’s loss,” he said. “Our Napoli could have scored four against this Juventus, don’t forget it. If you don’t believe me, ask your fathers if we’d have scored four. This Juventus doesn’t compare to the team we came up against.”
As always Napoli didn’t forget ol’ Diego, their greatest-ever player. The club sent out a number of tweets including one reading: “The greatest of all time, happy birthday Diego.”
